Chapter Five
Living with ADHD
Children with ADHD
A DHD is a full-time disorder which extends beyond bad behavior and school problems and affects all aspects of a person's life. Kids with ADHD aren't kids with issues but children with a serious problem. They have a complicated medical condition for them and those around them, and they stand out at all stages of development as distinct from peers and siblings (personal information, Dr Geoffrey Kewley, Learning Evaluation and Neurocare Centre, UK, 2007). There has been no psychological work conducted on how children feel and act with ADHD. Some kids may know they're different from others, but some may not have a highly established self-conception of what it means to behave differently from other kids. Research suggests that children perceive dichotomy when taking or not taking medicine, which is exacerbated by parents and teachers, e.g. feeling good / bad, happy / sad, playing nicely / fighting, etc. Children with ADHD have different social skills than those without ADHD; they can have tantrums and be violent towards others, and find it more difficult to make friends and keep them. As a result the parents may seek to fill the gap, which may contribute to the stresses they face. This is where teachers and other responsible adults can relieve some of the pressure at home by being compassionate, attentive and helpful to the school kid and knowing how ADHD presents itself. The above accounts suggest that routine and a stable environment are very important for managing symptoms of ADHD, as is continuity with the healthcare professionals the child sees.
As children grow up their symptoms are likely to change and expand into other areas. Of example, children with ADHD are more likely to be frequent smokers and drinkers between the ages of 11 and 16, and are more likely to have taken drugs. In terms of treatment, children may agree to avoid taking medicine at a particular point in their lives, or may move into adulthood by themselves.
Adults with ADHD
There is much less development in the professional discourse surrounding ADHD and adulthood than with children; indeed, most information about aetiology, symptoms or treatment comes from children's observations or studies.
Adults with ADHD can subsequently face greater obstacles in understanding and accepting and maintaining the disorder. About 30 and 50 percent of children with ADHD are believed to bring the condition into adulthood. Adult condition experiences may be characterized by feelings of restlessness and disinhibition close to those of adolescence. There is also a strong correlation of depression as well as drug abuse in adulthood.
Developmental changes can mean that levels of self-awareness or motivation toward a specific task can sometimes make the symptoms easier to manage – though this is not always the case. Living with ADHD as an adult may pose everyday challenges at work and at home, and may hinder the development of behaviors and routines that are often rooted in 'natural' lives. Problematic areas also rely on organisation. The understanding of encouragement and dedication to ADHD diagnosis and care.
